Reconstruction Evaluation

After completing my reconstruction I am happy with the final cut however I do feel I could of done better in some aspects. The main challenge was trying to match the similar lighting and look of the scene. I had to film with a low focus and colour grade the video when editing to try to make the lighting as similar as possible.

Summary of Research.

To get a better understanding of how to remake a scene I looked at other examples, some high budget complete remakes and some no budget remakes alike, only with the exact same positioning and acting, not the look.

On YouTube I looked at an example where they recreated Avengers Endgame.  Obviously this was a very big ask and challenge as the Avengers film budget is around 368 million on each film. However they did a very good job with the exact details and positions almost the same. Of course the special effects where not the same but it didn't matter, it still felt quite alike with the two movies side by side. I then went on to look at some of the industry professional reconstructions. The one that stood out the most for me was the Psycho remake in 1998 being recreated with every scene almost exactly alike.

Comparing the two.

Below are the two scenes side by side. I tried to get as similar positioning and look as I could possibly without the use of green screen. I did think the layout of the background had to be alike and I do think it is very similar enough with them leaning on the bar handrail as well. Of course Its not completely identical but with the colour grading and the lighting on the location, it was the best I could do. I had seen in my research of the lower budget remakes, that the most important thing was that the point that it felt alike.

How could my Reconstruction been better?

My recreation doesn't look exactly like the TopBoy original,, but it does feel alike through the actors movement and pose. The timing of the dialogue could of been slightly better.   Also the positioning of the camera wasn't ideal but it was challenging with the tight space we had next to the handrail to get the look exactly the same. TopBoy was all filmed around East London so it was an option to try to film in the exact location to make the reconstruction a lot better and look and feel the same, however without a budget and also just tracking down the specific location itself would of been impossible as this one scene looks like its filmed in one of the thousands of tower blocks in London.

What was the original media product you tried to reconstruct?

The original media product was a series: Topboy

How did You recreate the original technology? Any Problems?

I tried to recreate the scene with a similar look and to do this when editing. I used cloud grading to make the scenes lighting look more alike the original. Of course I didn't have the same standard technology as they may have had at Netflix but I feel I did match it quite well. The biggest problem I had when filming was actually less of the technical side it was more of the timing of the actors who were not professional, and getting that the same as the real clip. It was also a challenge to avoid people in the background as the location was college and I could only access it during busy daytimes.

How closely did you follow the representation In the original?

I tried to follow the exact same look and feel to the original however once completed it was slightly out of time at some points. This was just because it was very hard to direct the actors when to speak and wait the same amount of time as in the original.

What genre was the original how do you know?

TopBoys genre is classed as a Drama but it could be considered more of a action/crime. The genre I will likely be doing for my FMP will be a drama/Sci-fi.

What did you learn from doing the reconstruction?

After completing my reconstruction I've got a better understanding at just what goes into every second of a production. For example the timing of the dialogue and directing the actors exactly was the biggest problem as it was very hard to get right.

Has it generated ideas for FMP?

Yes it has inspired me more to work towards the idea for my FMP as enjoyed the process.  I also did get more of an understanding of how to set out each scene as it is a lot more complicated than you think. I also got to practice more with the editing and colour grading.
