Minimalist Film Poster Evaluation

Summary of Research

In preparation for my final minimalist Joker poster I looked at similar ideas including a minimalist Superman poster. I then looked at some of the best considered film posters of all time. These included Saul Bass's 'West Side Story', 'Exodus' and 'The shinning' I looked at many existing Joker posters but overall I was most influenced by the minimalist Superman poster with his glasses.

Overall I was pleased with my final Joker minimalist poster.  At first I considered using an image or section of an actual photo of the Joker however I went back to the original idea of using an image to represent a character in simple form, not a photograph.  The main playing card idea worked well as it was an obvious link to the Joker character without actually showing him.  At the same it was an eye catching image.  I also liked the retro feel of the Playing card I chose which also links to the fact that the film is based I a past era (in New York).  The shape of the image worked with the spinning effect that I wanted to create and I was pleased with the result.  Afterwards when I worked on the Avatar 2 poster, I thought about the idea of using just logos with no text at all.  I did then consider removing the word Joker from the playing card as it was not strictly necessary but thought it looked better with it.  I also considered removing the title completely as the word Joker was already there.  this would have taken the minimalist idea to another level however it did not look quite right with this image and it would not have been clear enough that it was a film poster.

I would like in the future to try to design a film poster which manages to not even have a title but I'm not sure yet exactly how this could work.
