University

For part of my L3 Media course we had to look into what we want to do after its finished. Choosing the next step in my career: When looking at what I want to do after this L3 Media course is finished I've been considering everything. My main choice is likely to be to continue education at University.

Final Personal statement that I submitted through UCAS to the university of my choice.

My decision to study Filmmaking comes from my early interest in images. As a child I was always setting up scenes to put on performances for my family, using household items as props. Later I made short films with my friend, including ‘extras’ to go on the DVD. We would sell these films around school. Moving to a college to study Media has been great for me, and I am looking forward to continuing my studies. Filmmaking at degree level would be great for me, taking my broad-based media skills acquired on the Level 3 Media UAL and focusing on one specific aspect of media. I want to put all my skills and energy into the thing I love most, developing my pre-production, production and editing skills further. I am also looking forward to university because filmmaking degree courses run alongside other visual and creative arts subjects, and that there may be opportunities for collaboration with these other areas. Filmmaking depends on excellent teamwork, and I very much enjoy working in teams. I am excited to try out all aspects of film making and am not afraid to make mistakes, throwing myself into any project creatively and wholeheartedly.  I have always enjoyed hands-on practical work and am well-organised and good at problem-solving. In addition, I am keen to study the theory that underpins the practice, for example, understanding different genres of film in greater depth.

I am also interested in what is going on in the world in terms of politics and many aspects of the arts. I have worked as an assistant stage manager on a local panto and a community opera, and have assisted on filming several concerts and other events. I spent two weeks on a work experience for top advertising company Unruly. This gave me a useful experience as to what the creative world is like and how enjoyable a job in it could be.

In addition, I have been working for Candi Creative, a commercial Design and Production company set up by students at my college, fulfilling a commission for branding. Outside college, I volunteer 1 day a week at my local primary school to get experience of working with children in education.

Going often to the cinema and seeing some of the world’s best films showed me just how powerful film can be. A good film can really take your breath away, move you and make you think about life. A filmmaker that has inspired me a lot is Pedro Almodovar as I admire the way he expresses himself threw his bold visual style in his movies with powerful colours. This tells the story of his characters but also feels very personal, almost like he’s making a film from what he’s learnt and discovered threw out his life. Another filmmaker I admire is Ken Loach as in a completely different way he gets across a very important and moving message without any effects or audio simply just with fantastic acting and storyline.

That is the creative area I want to be in and the idea of 3 years learning and being fully immersed in film sounds absolutely amazing.

Apprenticeships

At first the idea of taking on a Apprenticeship after I finish my Media Course here at City & Islington college sounded very appealing as they have a real work feel to them and of course the possibility of being paid.

I first looked at an Apprenticeship in being a Film Runner at MPC. This would give me the chance at becoming an assistant or runner in the media industry. I was very interested in this at the beginning as I had enjoyed doing some assistant work before for performances. The idea of combining this with the industry I wanted to go down was very appealing.

I then looked at the possibility of studying the Intro to Film Producing course at Met Film School. This was a course set up for people interested in becoming a Film Producer. I felt that Apprenticeships sounded great but for me they didn't offer as much as Uni. The chance of getting in the film industry may be a bit more likely but the all round experience I want of Uni is missing. By this I mean moving to a new city and living in halls of residence, meeting lots of other young people with the same interests.

Having looked into Apprenticeships in more detail they seem to sound a lot simpler and easier than they actually are. The standard of work at first you are doing is actually not at a good standard and yes a year of not doing what you really want to do to get to where you want to be. The possibility of making tea and checking emails for a year to get into a job didn't really sound like my style. Added to this, they are really hard to get accepted on as so many people are trying to do them.

Once I started visiting some university open days, the opportunities they were offering were really clear to me. Especially the idea of having the facilities that I could use to start making films from week 1. The universities also offered opportunities to work within the industry as part of the courses so you have more opportunity to actually be creative yourself.  The disadvantage of course is that you have to pay fees and don't get paid but generally I have decided to go for the university option.
