FMP RESEARCH

Researching Slapstick and Situation comedies.

Examples of slapstick comedy and of Situation Comedy:

Charlie Chaplin films

Tom & Jerry

The Simpsons

Friends

Does slapstick comedy encourage children to be violent and do what they see in the films?

I think yes they could possibly encourage children as it doesn’t show the consequences of violence. However I feel to most people they will see it so unrealistic and stupid which does make the comedy funny, they wont be encouraged by the violence shown in the show or film.

Comparing Tom & Jerry (1940) to The Simpsons (1989) Animation then and now.

In The Simpsons despite it being a children’s comedy the characters of course are more realistic and usually do more normal stuff, this is why its classed as a situation comedy. However The Simpsons still can be classed as very silly as the look of the characters is realistic as they are meant to be humans but are all yellow skinned.

Compared to Tom and Jerry The Simpsons does show a lot more real situations and emotion this is done probably a lot easier than Tom and Jerry as there is a speaking. Its done very well that you do see a situation of an ordinary family and feel and enjoy watching there life.

Tom and Jerry is also a animation and a children’s comedy but probably more extreme and unlike The Simpsons less suitable for adults or older children. This is because Tom and jerry has more of a target audience, this may be because of its genre (Slapstick Comedy) due to only really being about one thing fighting one and other.

Animation from the time of Tom and Jerry has changed a lot obviously as it is always is getting more up to date. However the look and drawings of the animations have not really as it always needs to look cartoon.

Narrative Structure in Some like It Hot.

In Some Like It Hot the first 15 minutes starts by the set up where two poor musicians who work in a illegal Mafia bar witness a genocide. This is the problematic and then begins the journey of them pretending to be woman and running away.

Toy Story

When you look very carefully at the first Toy Story you realise just how perfect and thought about every little detail is. For example the way Andy plays with his toys is so accurate and real the study and analysis the film did on children playing with toys becomes very obvious. The way they portray this is amazing as well. The choice of angles and little hints transports the viewer into the life of being a toy but also gives hints that its more then just that. This is done by the song choice, and the mix of perspectives from Andy's view to Woodys. This very well thought out opening scene gets the point across very well and sets up the movie.

Analysing Camera angles and shots in Joker'

I admired the new joker movie so much and thought it was unbelievable but the best thing about the film for me was the incredible thrilling look and colour scheme the film had given the Joker and they stuck with these colours threw out the entire film. This now very recognisable look of when Arthur transforms into the joker matches the world that also changes with him. The look change is actually very Important and from when the Joker has this look a movement in the city starts and the look of clowns is seen as the revolution.

This artistic side of things made the film for me as this world based on New York in the 1980s almost changes with Arthur to match the jokers look and his colours.

Not only is it the look but the thinking behind each scene really does create something like no other. Its almost like from just watching a certain scene in this movie, appreciating the art and look behind combined with the incredible acting from Joaquin Phoenix you almost know right then this film will win oscars and is something very special and beautifully put together. The now very famous picture of the Joker in the lift just works and gives an idea into the world you are taken into in this film. The amazing makeup combined with the lighting and positioning creates a very special looking scene.

The next scene I selected is so important to the movie as just before Murray (Robert De Niro) walks away Arthur asks him "one more thing Murray when I walk out will you announce me as Joker"

The importance of this scene really is so important to the film and the thinking behind it did need to be perfect and it was. From the slightly shaky camera angle and the look threw the shoulders of Murray onto the joker in his changing room before him saying call me joker really did make the moment so important and the best part of the film.

Comparing TV Adverts

Gillette 'The Best A Man Can Be' Advert 1993 Vs 2019

1990s Ad

A very typical 1990s ad spreading the message of masculinity and showing the best happy lifestyle a man can get. A husband a father looking after his family and winning at life. Being a successful man. Shots of men with woman hugging and loving them, men happy in the office at work, shots of men at home with the typical stay at home wife and child and clips of men winning sport events. The quick clips of the shinny products splashing around and out of the water in the most manly looking way. The loud epic rock music with memorable lyrics spreading the message this is the look and life a man has to have. All of this combined does sort of work at the time and I can see men at the time possibly thinking I want that life. However looking at this advert now it comes across extremely outdated and sexist with its strong message of masculinity seen now as dangerous.

2019 Ad

In the new advert Gillette basically rule over there own advert from the past and says it is wrong and times have changed. The advert tackles the big problems in society now with the constant news of woman finally having the courage to talk about the problems of sexual abuse and how it was almost acceptable at the time with masculinity being so powerful.

Times have changed and there is less of these problems now however the advert did tackle this. Many felt this was unacceptable as it was more for the PR and free publicity from the talk the ad would make. with the product not even in sight in the new ad.

Short Films

I researched some different short films in preparation for my Essay on the art of short films. (Essay Below)

I looked at short films covering many different genres.

The Red Balloon

Albert Lamorisse 1956

The Red Balloon is still considered one of the best short films ever made. Such a simple but clever story takes you on the experience of a young boy and his balloon in Paris.

The fact it is such a simple idea but can still show such a connection between two characters is why it works so well. I particularly admired this short film as it once again proved short films need to be quite simple for them to be effective. This is why in my short film FORSAKEN getting that feel was the most important. Some of the best short films really are just simple but effective.

The Phone Call

Mat Kirkby 2013

A short film about a volunteer at a crisis center who receives a phone call from a man slowly poisoning himself to death.

The most important part of this film was capturing such emotion in a phone call.

The Art of Short Films.

This Essay will look at how you compress everything needed for a successful film into such a small amount of time. I will also look at the techniques used to keep short films exciting. I am writing this as preparation for the making and researching my short film “FORSAKEN”  which is about a boy/young man who wakes up to find he is alone, everyone has gone, disappeared or evacuated for some unknown reason. The reason for this is never revealed.

One might think a short film is simpler and easier to make than a full length film however I am not so sure. Of course they take less time and have a smaller budget but actually you have to put more time and imagination into the creative side. I believe they are actually harder to do well than full length films because the work and time needed to capture the audience’s attention quickly and creatively is a far greater challenge. A simple, effective and powerful message that can be portrayed in such a short time is an incredible challenge.

With a normal length film you have over an hour to get the meaning or the message of the film across and to develop the characters and story. In a short film you have to get it across in a matter of seconds or minutes. This is my main fear making “FORSAKEN” because I really want to make sure I can capture the emptiness effect. I want to keep the film quite mysterious but to still get across the characters feelings and emotions, in an exciting story within the short time limit.

The next step to a successful short film is the simple storyline that does everything needed within the time frame. Some of the best film storylines are actually very personalised by their directors. It is the telling of a story through the perceptions of its’ creator making it truly representative of the artist's outlook on life. Often there is just one central character and the film is seen from their perspective.  There isn’t time to develop more characters. In my previous work I have always told the story from my own point of view and for my film “FORSAKEN” I will be trying to capture an experience and outlook which I have always wondered about, ie waking up completely alone.  This idea has recently suddenly become easier to imagine because of the Corona virus, empty abandoned areas are becoming a reality.

I have looked at three different types of short films.  My own is going to be even shorter. The first short film I researched was The Red Balloon (Albert Lamorisse 1956 36 mins).

I had to research The Red Balloon as it is still considered one of the best short films ever made and was very original. Such a simple but clever story takes you on a journey following the experience of a young boy and his balloon in Paris in the 1950s. The fact it is such a simple idea but can still show such a connection between two characters (the boy and his balloon) is why it works so well. It also gives a really good impression of ordinary daily life of a child in 1956 Paris.  I particularly admired this short film as it once again proves that short films can be so effective while staying so simple. This is why in my short film “FORSAKEN” getting that simplicity is the most important to me. The natural dull grey colours in The Red Balloon contrast massively with the bright red balloon and give a colour grading effect without the use of technology.  This effect is used frequently today by the digital technique of colour grading for example in Money Heist or Handmaid’s tail or The Joker which all stick within a colour theme and use strong red to contrast. In “FORSAKEN” I intend to make the general colour theme very muted colours but the main actor will stand out subtly due to his pyjama bottoms and the red lining on his hood.

From watching and researching The Red Balloon I got more of an understanding of how to capture such connections and emotions with character and allow the story to develop in that time. In short films you have less time for the character development so the smaller cast is usually the most effective.  In “FORESAKEN” I am using just one character.

The lack of time to develop the story means it can work well to end with uncertainly leaving it for the viewer to decide themselves how it will end.

The second second short film I researched is I’m Here (Spike Jones 2010 35 mins).

This is a short sci-fi film drama.  The story again is quite simple: A library assistant called Sheldon who has a very boring and ordinary life falls in love with a woman who makes him see life differently.  The story ends tragically the Sheldon has to literally give up his own life for her to survive.

The characters are actually robots but the look of the film makes them seem almost natural.  This is done by using real actors wearing robot costumes. The robots have heads like old computers and it is interesting how although you cannot see facial expressions, their emotions come across. Some expressions are created through using animation on the faces.

The way that Sheldon’s life is portrayed is clever.  They make him look really lonely and sad by way his flat looks and the muted colours.  When he falls in love and him and his girlfriend start having fun together, there is lots of colour used.  The soundtrack is also important and contributes to the atmosphere changing from sad to happy. I admire the way story and emotions come through even though this is a sci-fi story. I want to manage this is “FORSAKEN” too.

The third film I have researched is The Phone Call  (Mat Kirkby 2013 21 mins)

This is a short film set in London about a volunteer at a crisis centre who receives a phone call from a man who has taken an overdose.  He won’t let the character Heather who takes the phone call, call an ambulance.  The story focuses on the connection between the two main characters one who we see and the other who we only meet as a voice on the other end of the call.  The drama focuses on the growing tension and Heather’s growing distress and frustration at not being able to prevent his suicide.  The end of the film focuses on the effect that this one phone call has had on her life and her realisation that life is short.

The filming is very simple, the first shot is Heather at her desk but as the tension increases the camera gets closer and closer.  The tension is also added to by focusing on Heather’s watch and a clock so make us focus on the fact that time is running out. The film is a great example of how involved with the characters you can get in a short time.  The story stays in your mind afterwards and makes you think about your priorities.  In my film “FORSAKEN” I hope to make people think about what it would be like to be in the main character’s situation, well after they have finished watching the film.

From looking at these three films it has given me a better understanding of how to compact everything needed into a short amount of time to make a really effective film. In my short film and any future films I make, I would like to use many of the techniques I have noticed.  I can see that despite and even because of their limitations, Short Films can be expressive and magnificent works of art, and I am excited to be making one myself.

LOOK OF FORSAKEN

Deciding the look for FORSAKEN was very important as it brought the film to life and gave it a personality.

Designing the Mood Boards (Go to FMP-Pitch) really helped me show the urban emptiness look of London I wanted. The filming locations where of course a key part in the look I wanted. The barbican was an obvious choice with it having this extraordinary concrete architecture gave us interesting angles and backgrounds.

I knew once I had filmed colour grading would be very important in finalising this look and vision I had. Another option was to have the entire film in black and white to completely match this look.

The Outfit.

Deciding the outfit of my one and only actor was very important as it had to match the look of the emptiness effect I wanted to create. The idea all along was to make the point clear Lucas had just woken up was for him to where pyjamas. I loved this idea however I felt a full pyjama outfit would be to much and not match the urban look so I decided a hoodie combined with pyjama bottoms was perfect. The original idea was this outfit to be accompanied with Lucas being barefoot but I felt this was to harsh on my actor as it was extremely cold at 6am on a windy morning. I was very happy how the final look ended up. A urban abandoned world emptied out for a Forsaken boy alone to explore.

The crazy challenge for filming my FMP will be trying to create the effect of an empty London without a budget. For my research I wanted to ask people who know London very well and may have experienced London feeling empty at some certain hours its not busy. I started this with a short interview/questionnaire.

I then Location started looking at road closures in central London. This meant at certain times of day there would be no cars and pedestrians on these roads. This was a great discovery for me as I found road closures in and around the area of Tottenham court road. these are quite big roads so filming there would benefit the effect a lot.

FMP Research interview. The Feedback

This Interview/questionnaire is designed to gather information about Filming locations and creating the effect on camera of an empty London.

The reason I’m researching the above is because for my FMP film I am thinking of making a Sci-Fi/Drama about a man waking up to find everyone on earth has disappeared.

Questions 1

  1. Have you ever felt completely alone somewhere in London? No, as I am out during peak hours and when I am outside during off-peak hours I am with friends or family

2.  Have you seen the opening of the film ’28 Days Later’ where a man is walking around an abandoned London? If so what did You think of this and was it a very powerful effect seeing one of the worlds busiest cities empty? Yes I have seen the opening. I thought the colour grade and the use of sound design and engineering made the film effective -not just visually.

3.   Have you ever been somewhere outside in London and its been completely empty. If so where was this and what sort of time was this? Yes, although I have spoken to you about the locations.

Questions 2

  1. If one day you woke up and everyone on earth had disappeared apart from you what would you feel? Alone and Curious to why and how everyone has disappeared

2.  Do you think without a budget filming this effect in the centre of London will be possible?

Yes, if you are able to pick the right time and date to film in an empty space in central London

3.  Does the idea of a Sci-Fi/Drama short film about this happening to a young man interest you?

The idea does not interest me, although, if done correctly it may interest me.

Questions 3

  1. How do you think the effect of a empty London could be made?

Sound Tracks, Sound Design/Engineering, Colour Grading & Camera Movement.

2.    Do you feel the idea of doing this for my FMP is to ambitious and risky?

No, it can’t be risky and no it is not ambitious.

3.  Would you enjoy a film that captures this effect well (Empty London) ?

Maybe

Thank you for completing this Interview/questionnaire on Possible filming locations and the effect of an empty abandoned London.

WHAT GENRE IS FORSAKEN?

Is FORSAKEN a drama, a Sci-fi or a Thriller?

Id like to think FORSAKEN is a drama but also very much a Sci-fi as the message and idea of a boy/man waking up one day to find they are abandoned on earth is very supernatural.
